Shanghai - Yuyuan gardens

Sunday, August 16, 2015

It was drizzling today, so we decided to postpone our trip to West Lake and to visit Shanghai museum instead, which is located on the People’s square.  But when we came there and saw a line several blocks long, we changed the plan and went to one old shopping mall instead.  Shopping is a very much Shanghainese experience too.

In the afternoon, we went to Yuyuan gardens.  This is a traditional Chinese garden with many pavilions, ponds, stone structures, and bridges.  It is smaller than the humble administrator's garden we visited in Suzhou before but equally elaborate.  Many bridges are zigzag-shaped – it is well known that evil spirits can fly only in strait lines, so this shape of bridges stops them.  Next to the gardens is a bazaar, which is unbelievable busy.
